Young Man Found Dead in Suspected Suicide in Belmopan

BELMOPAN CITY, Belize (WBWTN) — A 19 year old man was found dead late Monday night in what police are currently treating as a suspected suicide in the Las Flores area of Belmopan City.

The tragic discovery was made around 10:30 p.m. on May 19th, when the victim’s brother found him unresponsive and immediately contacted authorities to report the incident at their residence on Ramirez Street in the Las Flores area. Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless body of Benjamin Maas, lying face up on a bed. An orange electrical cord was wrapped around his neck, with one end tied to a bathroom door and the other to the bed’s headboard. 

According to authorities, Benjamin Maas had recently traveled from San Benito Potje in the Toledo District to visit family and seek employment in Belmopan. Earlier that day, he visited the Belmopan Police Station to apply for a police record.

Before taking his life, Maas reportedly messaged several close relatives and friends, indicating his intentions. In one of the messages, he told his sister to “tell mom I love her.” Despite her pleas, warning him that he would hurt their mother, Maas stated that it was time for him to go. He also shared that he had previously attempted to end his life but was stopped by his uncle.

Maas’s body was examined at the scene by forensic personnel, and no signs of foul play were observed. His body was taken to the Western Regional Hospital, where a medical officer officially declared him dead.

A post-mortem examination is pending while police continue to investigate, the case is currently being treated as a death investigation suspected suicide.
