Dangriga Police Clash with Teachers as Industrial Action Begins
Southern Belize (WBWTN) – This morning on George Price Drive, Mile 2 in Dangriga, five vehicles were parked in the middle of the highway, with teachers claiming they were experiencing mechanical issues.
In response, police arrived with a tow truck in an attempt to remove the vehicles and disperse the gathering. However, teachers resisted, leading to a confrontation between law enforcement and some members of the teaching community.
A member of the Belize National Teachers Union had a strong message for the police during a live broadcast from the scene. She said:
Further south at the Independence Junction, the situation unfolded differently. While teachers restricted the flow of traffic, police there allowed the demonstration to proceed peacefully, ensuring that no one was hurt.
This morning was all about the BNTU Members expressing their discontent with the government, as the Prime Minister had sent a strong message to the teachers, saying they can do what they want because the government of Belize has no money to raise the pay of teachers and public servants.
