Teachers Protest

Belize City, Belize – The United Democratic Party (UDP) took to their official Facebook page with a fiery message from Party Leader Hon. Shyne Barrow, calling on Belizeans to stand in solidarity with the nation’s teachers and public officers.

Barrow expressed frustration over what he called a continued betrayal of educators and civil servants under the current administration. In his statement, he highlighted the 10% salary cut imposed in 2021, the ongoing freeze on increments, and the government’s failure to follow through on promises made to public workers.

“Instead of being supported, teachers are now facing arrests for standing up for what they’ve earned through years of dedication,” Barrow wrote.

The UDP Leader accused the Briceño-led government of ignoring the struggles of ordinary Belizeans, despite publicly boasting about economic growth and IMF-praised GDP increases. He said many Belizeans are still living paycheck to paycheck, with rising living costs and no real relief.

Barrow’s message wasn’t just aimed at the current administration he acknowledged that both political parties have historically fallen short when it comes to protecting and valuing teachers and public officers. However, he insisted that the current government had a unique opportunity to make real change and missed it.

“This PUP government promised a 20% raise for teachers back in 2020. Now, in power, they’ve found money for massive contracts and political allies, but somehow not for our educators,” Barrow wrote.

He also pointed to the recent $1.7 billion national budget, calling it the largest in the country’s history, but criticized its lack of investment in public servants’ well-being.

Barrow ended his post with a strong call to action. He urged Belizeans across the country to stand up, demand accountability, and push for better treatment of those serving in classrooms and government offices.
