Belize City, (WBWTN) – A deadly shooting occurred on the evening of May 1st, marking a somber beginning to the new month in Belize City.
Authorities responded to reports of gunshots shortly after 8:00 p.m. in the Coney Drive area. Upon arrival of the City Police they found a man lying motionless on the sidewalk. The victim, later identified as 61-year-old Carlos Avelar, was wearing a green shirt and short pants.
Initial reports suggest that Avelar was walking near the corner of Coney Drive and Sunrise Avenue when he was approached by two individuals on a motorcycle. One of the men allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired several shots before both suspects fled in the direction of Sunrise Avenue.
Avelar was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators collected several spent shell casings and samples of blood as part of their ongoing investigation.
At this time, police have not confirmed a motive for the attack. At this stage, the circumstances behind the shooting remain uncertain. Investigators are continuing their work, and anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has helpful information is encouraged to reach out to the police.
