Santa Elena Cayo, Belize (WBWTN) – A Santa Elena resident is recovering after being shot in his own yard during a brazen attack on Wednesday evening.
Alfonso Vargas Diaz, 41, was reportedly tending to his motorcycle at his home on Carmen Street around 6:00 p.m. when two men on a black motorcycle entered his fenced yard. Both assailants were dressed in black and wore full-face helmets that concealed their identities.
According to Diaz, the passenger on the motorcycle brandished what appeared to be a black 9mm pistol and pointed it at him from close range. As he tried to run, a bullet hit him in the upper section of his left thigh.
The attackers quickly sped off in the direction of Salazar Street. Diaz was later transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital for treatment. Medical personnel confirmed that the bullet had penetrated but left no fragments, and the injury was not considered life-threatening. He was later released.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
