Belmopan, Belize (WBWTN)- Members of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) have overwhelmingly rejected a government proposal to implement a 3% salary adjustment starting October 1, 2025. The announcement came directly from BNTU President Nadia Caliz during a follow-up live video after her initial stream was accidentally deleted.

According to Caliz, a total of 1,532 members voted against the proposed adjustment, while 438 members voted in favor, signaling a clear majority disapproval.

“This result shows that our teachers are not satisfied with what is being placed on the table,” Caliz said. “The offer does not reflect the value of our work or the sacrifices we’ve made, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The union leader also addressed the issue of the reinstatement of increments—benefits that were frozen during the height of the pandemic. She emphasized that the union views these increments not as a gift or negotiation point, but as a right that was deferred and must now be honored.

“What was taken away from us was something we worked for. The increment proposed for April 1, 2026, is not up for negotiation. It is owed to you,” Caliz stated firmly.

In response to recent claims suggesting that public officers and teachers will be receiving a 14.5 , Caliz clarified that this figure includes the return of already-earned increments and other delayed benefits. She called the claim misleading and criticized it as political propaganda.

“There’s a narrative being pushed that makes it sound like we’re being given something extra. But the truth is, these are benefits we earned. Every increment must be worked for nothing is automatic,” she said.

Caliz urged union members not to be swayed by political rhetoric or public speculation, and instead to rely on the union for accurate updates. She closed the session by expressing gratitude to members for their participation and mentioned she was feeling unwell, signing off with a message of solidarity.

“Thank you all for your patience and participation. Stay strong, stay united, and always listen to your union. Solidarity forever.”

The BNTU is expected to return to the negotiating table with the government to discuss the timeline for full reinstatement of all outstanding increments.
