William Dawson Peace Cup Returns

Belize City, (WBWTN ) – The energy was high at the Marion Jones Complex as the 2025 William Dawson Football Peace Cup officially got underway. Hosted by the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), the opening ceremony brought together young athletes, community leaders, and supporters from across Belize City.

The Peace Cup, named in honor of the late William Dawson, isn’t just about football it’s about giving young people something positive to be part of. It encourages unity, discipline, and personal growth, especially in neighborhoods where crime and violence have taken a toll.

The stands were filled with supporters as twelve teams gathered on the field, ready to play with heart. The event saw appearances from several well known faces, including Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, CEO Sharol Carr Saldivar, and Eastern Regional Commander ACP Gualberto Garcia, among others.

ACP Garcia spoke about how football can do more than entertain it can help change lives. He pointed out that many youths are affected by crime, whether directly or indirectly, but they also hold the potential to be leaders in their communities. Creating safe spaces like this tournament is one way to keep that potential alive.

Meanwhile, CEO Saldivar spoke passionately about her dream of seeing football fields on every block, where young people can play without fear and families can come together. She believes football teaches lessons in teamwork, respect, and leadership skills that go beyond the field.

Minister Musa praised the effort behind the Peace Cup and highlighted how events like this give young people a chance to connect, build friendships, and learn how to overcome challenges together. He emphasized that reducing crime starts with investing in people especially the youth and offering them better choices.

As the tournament continues in the coming weeks, players and fans alike are encouraged to keep the spirit of the Peace Cup alive lifting each other up, playing with passion, and showing what unity truly looks like.
