Belmopan, Belize – A simple act of kindness quickly turned into a terrifying situation for a young woman in Belmopan over the weekend. Police have charged a 53 year old homeless man with sexual assault following the incident.
According to reports, on Saturday morning, June 7th, a 26 year old woman was driving along Senior Dr Force Drive when she stopped at a tacos stand in front of GSE Butane. While she was there, the vendor reportedly chased away a man believed to be homeless.
Feeling sorry for him, the woman decided to help. She drove off in the direction he had walked, hoping to offer him some money for food. She found him near an empty lot by Brodies on Sand Forest Drive, got out of her car, and handed him three Belize dollars.
But what was supposed to be a good deed took a dark turn. The man suddenly grabbed her, pulled her towards him, and began kissing her neck. The woman managed to push him away and rushed back into her vehicle. As she tried to drive off, the man reportedly knocked on her window, stuck out his tongue, and exposed himself.
After the ordeal, she went home and informed her husband before filing a police report the following day.
Police have since arrested and charged Nelson Martinez, a 53 year old homeless Belizean man, with sexual assault.
