Hurricane Erick Strengthens into Major Storm, Southern Mexico Braces for Impact

Mexico, (WBWTN)—Southern Mexico is bracing for a powerful hit from Hurricane Erick, now classified as a major Category 3 storm, as it barrels toward the Pacific coastline with destructive winds and torrential rain.

The storm, which continues to gain strength, is expected to make landfall late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, bringing life-threatening flash floods, dangerous storm surge, and the risk of deadly landslides to the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

As of 6:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday, the centre of Erick was located about 90 kilometres south-southwest of Puerto Ángel, moving northwest at 15 km/h. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, winds near the core of the storm have intensified to 195 km/h, with even stronger gusts being reported by Hurricane Hunter aircraft flying into the system.
