San Ignacio, Belize — A well-known real estate agent has been shot and killed in his home in western Belize, in what appears to be a deliberate attack.
Ulric Lynden Willoughby, 60, was at home with his wife on Sunday evening when an unidentified gunman opened fire from outside the house in Bullet Tree Village, Cayo District.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 7:20pm following reports of gunshots in the area. When officers arrived, they found Mr Willoughby lying face-down in the living room with gunshot wounds to the head and right upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife, a deputy director in the public service, told police the couple had been sitting on separate sofas watching television in their cream-coloured bungalow when she heard a male voice shout from outside.
She said she turned and saw a man standing on the veranda wearing a white T-shirt and a cloth tied over his head. Her husband stood up, and moments later several shots were fired. He took a few steps before collapsing to the ground.
She took cover, crawling into a bedroom and locking the door. From there, she contacted a housekeeper, who lives nearby and was able to reach the police.
When officers arrived, the house was still dark, with only the television on. Mrs Willoughby emerged to let them in and recounted what had happened.
Police recovered three spent 9mm shell casings on the veranda and several bullet fragments inside the house. The gunman is believed to have fired from outside, through a window or doorway.
No arrests have been made, and investigators say they are still working to establish a motive.
