Hattiville, Belize — A Belizean teenager has died following a traffic collision on the George Price Highway on Thursday morning, officials have confirmed.
The victim, 16 year old Terell Caleb Cardinez, was riding a bicycle near mile 16 in the direction of Belize City when he attempted to cross the road and was struck by a passenger bus shortly after 10:30am local time.
According to authorities, Cardinez attempted to cross the highway when he was hit by a Yutong Floralia bus travelling eastbound from Belmopan. The bus was being driven by a 20 year old , a resident of Independence Village in southern Belize.
Emergency medical responders from BERT arrived on the scene and pronounced the teenager dead. His body was later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, where he was officially declared deceased at 12:57pm by a hospital doctor.
Photographs from the scene show visible damage to the front-right side of the bus, including a shattered headlight.
Cardinez’s mother told reporters that her son had just left their home to go to a nearby shop when the incident occurred.
Police say investigations into the fatal crash are ongoing. No arrests or charges have been announced.
